OUR STORY

Hello and Welcome to Bison Bindery.

Bison Bindery grew out of a single idea - what if you traced a continuous line between the first naturalists and today? What stationery would be on their desks? What would it look like? And what would it be made from?
I invite you to take a step back in time with me and discover exquisitely painted patterns that celebrate the full breadth of the natural world, from the weird and wonderful to the mundane and common, printed on stationery that does no harm to the very environment it honours.

WHO WE ARE

Bison Bindery was founded by me, Maddie, and is inspired by my love for stationery, art and history. I am still involved from the first brushstroke of a painting to carefully packing up your order and sending it out to you from my studio on the edge of the South Downs. The majority of our designs are originally painted in watercolour, before being collaged together in photoshop to create the repeat patterns featured across our stationery.

WHAT

Bison Bindery is a place for me to showcase my love for stationery. I love the feeling of a crisp blank page under my pencil, and the endless possibilities before me. I love a complete set of pencils in every colour in my pencilcase, I love having a new notebook for each new project, I love my bullet journal and I love decorating it with stickers. I love the sense of calm from a matching set of stationery, and the feeling that anything is possible.

WHY

Being eco conscious and colourful isn't anything new. When I founded my business back in 2016 I was inspired by the principles of William Morris, that all my products should be both beautiful and useful, but more than - that I wanted to follow his example and ensure that everything I created was manufactured both ethically and sustainably. I was also inspired by the riot of colour he used across his work.

I work with the guiding principle that the art I create shouldn't harm the very subject that I am painting, which is why all of my products are made from sustainable materials that will do no harm to the environment. I manufacture entirely in Europe (in fact, except for the trays, all my other products are made in the UK) which reduces the miles they travel to you but also means that I can ensure that everyone involved in the production of your stationery has safe working conditions and is paid a fair wage.
